More Dangerous Than a Standing Army

$150.00

More Dangerous Than a Standing Army. 8” High.
Source of the quote: ↑ Thomas Jefferson to John Taylor, Monticello, 28 May 1816.
“I sincerely believe, with you, that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies; and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale.”
This have been misquoted, misattributed and the topic of heated discussion.
The hat is a send up to JP Morgan and his buddies from the guilded age and all that they represent.

Art History Sources:
I owe a great debt to the Lewis Chess Collection now on view at the Cloisters that is part of the Met Museum. Discovered on the Isle of Lewis of the British Coast in the early 19th Century, the Lewis Chess pieces, made of walrus’ tusks are believed to be 1000 years old. Experts are not really sure of their origins but the best guess is Nordic.
The feet popping out the bottom of the castle is a homage to Robert Arneson (1930 -1992)
The corporate logos are from the tree largest banks. The Wells Fargo is my favorite, where I made the stage coach with just a bunch of squiggles of clay that are abstract from up close but work from a distance.
