New Work

Michael Speaker sculptor

The expression "In hot water" is commonly used. It used to be shown as explorers in Borneo, or some such jungle, sitting in a pot in New Yorker cartoons in previous decades until it was considered insensitive. Keeping all that in mind, a guy in hot water is to me the ultimate in the Faustian compromise. The first lie is to oneself and then it goes downhill from there.

Hot Water is mixed woods 32 inches high. The base is 26 inches in diameter. The pot is ebony tiles, the fire is satinwood from Brazil. Very yellow. Firewood is driftwood. The figure is carved painted poplar as is the water. The design for the water is homage to a series of drawings from 17th century India that had that pattern in the water. My contribution was to make the pattern 3 dimensional. The lettering is carved and gold leafed.
